About Cognitive Assessments for Your Child or Teenager
We provide in-depth cognitive assessments for children and young people (aged 6 to 18). These assessments are designed to identify particular areas of strength, as well as ares which may require additional focus at school. Cognitive assessments provide an overall Full Scale IQ (general intelligence) score. Within this, cognitive assessments also provide detailed results for a range of skills, including:
Dyslexia Diagnosis
Verbal Comprehension
Visual Spatial Ability
Fluid Reasoning
Working Memory Ability
Processing Speed
As part of a cognitive assessment, we also conduct further ability testing in the following areas:
Oral Language/Written Expression
Numerical/Mathematical Ability
Reading Ability
In addition, cognitive assessments can provide a pre-screening for neurodevelopmental difficulties such as autism spectrum disorders and ADHD. They can also provide screening for dyslexia. However, it is important to highlight that these do not constitute full assessments of these areas, but rather can guide families on whether a further assessment may be beneficial. We are also happy to facilitate referrals in this regard following a cognitive assessment if appropriate.

Hello, I am Charlotte. I have worked within the NHS since 2013, and alongside independent practice, continue to work within a paediatric psychology service, working with children and young people with a range of physical health conditions.
My clinical training was broad, and I have experience working therapeutically with both adults and children/young people within a variety of settings. Since qualifying as a clinical psychologist, I have completed further specialist training in paediatric neuropsychology, and have extensive experience working with paediatric acquired brain injury and other neurological/neurosurgical conditions. I am registered on the Specialist Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists, which is the gold standard for registration for clinicians practising in neuropsychology.
As a clinical psychologist I have been trained to draw upon a number of psychological models, including cognitive behavioural therapy and other third wave cognitive therapies. I believe that it is important to integrate evidence-based therapies (what we know works) with the individual needs and preferences of the client. By drawing upon psychological models and your own personal experiences, I hope to help you to make sense of your difficulties, to be able to overcome them and improve your overall quality of life.
I am able to offer support for individuals who are experiencing psychological difficulties associated with physical health, low self-esteem, anxiety and depression, amongst other difficulties. I am passionate about enabling and empowering clients to live a life that is meaningful to them. I believe that a key priority for any effective treatment is building a strong, comfortable alliance and this is at the centre of all the work that I do.
I am able to offer cognitive assessments, which may be helpful if there is a concern regarding a child/young person’s learning or academic attainments. These in-depth, standardised assessments are designed to identify areas of strength, in addition to possible areas of weakness, across many aspects of intelligence and cognition (including verbal skills, non-verbal skills, working memory and processing speed). Some of which, may require additional support at school.
I look forward to meeting you.
What does a cognitive assessment involve?
You can expect a full cognitive assessment appointment to last approximately 2.5 hours. During this time, your child or young person will complete a number of assessments. You may also be asked to complete some questionnaires as well. We allow plenty of time for breaks. We ensure the testing environment is calm and friendly.
If your child or young person requires glasses for reading, please ensure they have these with them. Also, please let us know if your child has any additional difficulties which may affect testing (such as colour blindness or pre-identified learning needs).
We will also conduct an interview with the parent/s or guardian, to get a better sense of the child or young person's developmental history. If it is not appropriate to do so with the child or young person present, this can also be conducted separately over the phone.
We use the latest, most reliable, and widely accepted forms of assessment. These include the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children®-Fifth Edition (WISC®-V) and the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test®-Third Edition (WIAT®-III) . We may also select further assessments depending on the needs of the family.
We produce a detailed report, including recommendations for schools and families, to best promote the strengths (and develop areas of focus) of the child or young person.
